Earlier this year we announced that iWireless Solutions Ltd was awarded by CICRA (Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities) the task of auditing the mast emissions across the Channel Islands. Now that all RF audits have been carried out, we are happy to announce that part 1 of the 3-year project has been completed successfully.
The project entailed auditing mast emission at all the cellular sites on the Channel Islands. The reason for the audit is to measure emissions from radio masts to ensure they meet the standards set by the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). There were over 270 individual sites with a mix of large mast structures, small indoor cells and everything in between. The audits were completed within the 3-month timescale agreed with the client and the results are that all sites across the Channel Islands are well within the limits set by the ICNIRP.
From the outset, iWireless Solutions recognised that auditing emissions from radio sites requires a sensitive approach as it potentially affects people’s view on how safe their environment is. For this reason, we always had an open and transparent approach, both with the client and the locals. We ensured we took the time explaining how the surveys were done and the safety limits against which we were benchmarking our test data. Our survey engineer was also asked to give a short talk at a local school, explaining to the pupils what radio engineering was about, which was a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness to younger generations.
The project went smoothly and efficiently, so we will be following a similar process and planning when the surveys are repeated on a smaller sample of sites in 2018 and 2019. The future surveys need to be completed by June of each year to provide annual comparison of the changes, if any. Developing a dedicated website to display the results of the audits was a service iWireless Solutions added specifically for this project. It is an excellent way to show the results in a user-friendly style. It will serve the local community and the regulator for a long time, and can be updated and expanded as relevant. The website is open to the public and can be viewed here:
Our Radio Technical Consultant, Bachir Belloul, who led this project with CICRA has real admiration for the operators and the planners on the Channel Islands, “They have come up with some great creative engineering to camouflage most of their sites and blend them with the urban environment. I have seen many antennas disguised as flagpoles, flower pots, chimneys and gutter pipes and that’s terrific for keeping their towns and villages just the way you like to see them. Overall it was an interesting project to be part of and look forward to the future surveys.”
