As an extension to a truly wireless project at a brand new media company HQ, iWireless Solutions was asked to provide guidance on management of their airspace, i.e. the spectrum within the building. As a media company, the reliability of communication systems within the building is central to its operations. The majority of these systems depend on wireless technologies, including providing critical services such as the radio system used for building security. All wireless services will be sharing the same finite spectrum resource, so effective management of the airspace is essential to help reduce the risk of interference between systems. The need for competent airspace management is further highlighted by the multi-functional nature of the HQ – not just for corporate offices, but also retail space.
Some of the wireless services use spectrum which is licensed and coordinated by the national spectrum regulator. However, many of the services, such as Wi-Fi and IoT applications, use spectrum which is both unlicensed and heavily utilised. In these cases the landlord or building owner needs to take control of the airspace to ensure reliable services for all users.
