iWireless Solutions is proud to confirm its role as systems integrator in the recently launched world leading free, Wi-Fi network for the City of London. The multi-million pound project is part of one of the largest investments in wireless infrastructure ever seen in London, providing workers, residents and visitors with the ability to access digital rich content in a dense urban environment.
The network uses 802.11ac technology and licensed self-organising backhaul to deliver super-fast internet, Wi-Fi calling and video on demand (VoD) following a one-time only registration.
iWireless Solutions designed the outdoor public Wi-Fi network for O2 Wifi based on a robust and resilient architecture and was then tasked with installing, commissioning and optimising the deployment of the entire wireless network within the Square Mile. Our solution included the use of over 150 City of London columns and over 3km of data cabling. The project involved replacing the previous Wi-Fi system so a new hardware and wireless mesh backhaul network with fibre relay was created. iWireless Solutions worked closely with Virgin Media who supplied the fibre backhaul and established a close working relationship with the team at City of London and their contractors. This network provides coverage for key London landmarks such as St Pauls, Guildhall and Gherkin, as well as major transport hubs like Liverpool Street and Canon Street.
Commenting on the project, Founder and CEO of iWireless Solutions, Ravi Mondair says: “This project presented an extremely challenging environment, which required carefully coordinated multidisciplinary works in order to minimise disruption to the City. I am proud to say that the iWireless Solutions team and its partners put a tremendous effort into delivering such a complex solution in just 28 weeks.”
Catherine McGuinness, Policy Chairman at the City of London Corporation, has said in the City of London article how workers and visitors “will be able to benefit from an investment sure to brand the City as hub of connectivity.”
Also quoted was Derek McManus, Chief Operating Officer, O2 saying, “We understand the importance of digital connectivity in terms of driving the economy and ensuring that London can continue to compete on a global scale. This is why we’re investing in the City of London’s wireless infrastructure, to give people what they need wherever they are – reliable internet on the go.”
