In April 2017, iWireless Solutions Ltd was awarded by CICRA (Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities) the project of auditing the RF emissions from the entire 300 site portfolio across the Channel Islands, covering Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm.
- To carry out RF emission surveys of mobile telecommunication mast/base station sites operated by the three mobile network operators in the Channel Islands, covering all mobile masts and base stations in the islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm.
- To measure the level of non-ionising radiation emissions from each site, including the cumulative effect of shared sites, to assess whether they comply with the limits specified by the guidelines published by the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection1 (ICNIRP).
- To comment, in the final report, on whether the guidelines continue to be the most appropriate standard to apply and to advise whether there are alternative standards or approaches CICRAshould consider for future surveys.
- To carry out follow up surveys in 2018 and 2019 to cover a small number of newly installed or upgraded sites, where any concerns were identified during the previous audit/survey work.
The timeframe set for completing this project is just 3 months but iWireless Solutions is confident in achieving this target. Our team started the mobilisation process as soon as we were awarded the project – which is by now already in full swing, with the equipment having been calibrated, report and map templates set up and an engineer being based in Guernsey for the coming weeks.
CICRA’s Head of Policy and Consumer Affairs, Jonathan Tooley, commented: “CICRA is pleased to have iWireless Solutions working with us on this project to audit the mast networks in the Channel Islands. This is an important project for CICRA with the recent roll out of 4G networks across the islands to ensure that Channel Islanders have up-to-date information about the masts, and can be confident that emission levels are being monitored. We look forward to working with Louise, Bachir and the iWireless Solutions team over the coming weeks to complete this project.”
