‘Homecoming Scotland 2014’ was the year that Scotland welcomed sports enthusiasts from across the world for grand events such as the Commonwealth Games, with a major golfing event at Gleneagles not far behind.
Gleneagles, a world famous 5-star luxury hotel set in 850 acres, is well known for its golf courses, which have won multiple awards. So it is no surprise that it was chosen to host this prestigious golfing competition. With the golfing event being the third largest broadcasting event in the world and Scotland being the home of golf, the pressure was on to deliver a world class experience on all levels. In addition, the Scottish government wanted to use this event, as it did with the Commonwealth Games, to showcase Scotland’s journey to becoming a world-leading digital nation by 2020. As stated by Shona Robison, Cabinet Secretary for Sport, “mobile is critical to the Scottish Government’s world-class vision for a digital Scotland.”
When one of the UK’s key mobile operators awarded iWireless Solutions with the contract to design, build and maintain/support a wireless solution at Gleneagles in readiness for the golfing competition, we were ready to face the challenge head-on.
