We are all familiar with the Internet, which enables billions of people to interact with remote computers and with each other. We are now seeing the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), which includes an ever increasing number of connected devices or “things”.
IoT will enable improved management of resources, such as energy meters and vehicle fleets. Other applications include tracking assets, monitoring patients’ health and control of lighting, heating and CCTV in “smart buildings”.
Critical to IoT is wireless machine to machine (M2M) connectivity which allows devices to communicate with a management system. 4G and other wireless technologies are evolving to meet the demands of IoT which include large numbers of devices, sometimes in remote locations deep inside buildings.
Ericsson predicts that there will be 26 billion connected devices by 2020, and that IoT will generate $1.9 trillion revenue per annum globally. Significant challenges remain for IoT however, including the security of data and connections, and ensuring that cellular/wireless coverage is sufficient.
So how is iWireless Solutions responding to IoT?
- Consultancy: Helping customers assess the potential benefits of IoT
- R&D: Developing new products and services together with our industry partners
- Implementation: Designing and installing new or improved wireless infrastructure to provide device connectivity
- Efficiencies: Using IoT to reduce costs in its own operations
